Why am I being asked this information?
At Applied, we’re keen to help organisations learn as much as possible about what works (and what doesn’t) to attract and select the best candidates and give everyone a fair chance no matter their background.
Applied may use data you provide in research to continuously make hiring processes as fair as possible and of course, all the data is anonymised!
The organisation you’re applying to will never see your answers linked to your name. We only share aggregated information about an applicant pool with organisations (and only if there are enough applicants to ensure that your answers can remain anonymous!).
The aggregated data helps organisations identify if there is anything in their process that harms the chances of success for candidates from minority groups and take corrective action.
To help them do this, we collect routine equal opportunities data on candidates’ gender, age, ethnicity, disability status, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. Our forms differ based on the country context in which the role is based, and may change over time.
Why do you ask it first?
We collect it upfront because that allows us to help analyse any ‘leaky pipeline’ - i.e. we can help organisations learn if there are stages in an application process (from starting an application right through to the point of hire) where candidates of particular groups are disproportionately likely to drop out which could indicate room for learning and improvement. By asking these questions upfront, we can help organisations to learn if there are aspects of the application process itself that could be improved.
Why do you ask these specific questions? And how do you decide on which categories to include?
We try to strike the right balance between learning about multiple dimensions of diversity while not overburdening candidates when they're applying. For that same reason, we want to help organisations collect data that is detailed enough to understand how different people might be affected by a process, but not so granular that candidates find the process of answering too personally intrusive. We recognise this means that we are rarely able to fully capture the richness of different identities in the depth we would like to.
We conduct ongoing research on how we can make this process as inclusive as possible, and always welcome feedback from you - please write to us at hello@beapplied.com if you'd like to share your thoughts.
Is this data identifiable or attributable to me as a candidate?
No. We only ever analyse and display data at an aggregate and anonymised level.
Can I share some details but not all?
Absolutely, feel free to only answer the questions you feel comfortable sharing - you can always choose 'prefer not to say'.
What if I'm still not comfortable sharing any details?
That's totally fine, you can choose the option to share no details at all.
I answered some of the questions but then they all greyed out, why is that?
To be extra sure, we check that you are happy for the details you've shared to be stored on our database, if you select 'I don't want anyone to have this ...', we'll never record details you have shared, hence why they grey out. If you are happy to share, simply select 'I consent ...'
